The gardens at the Commissioner’s Residence, part of the Dawson Historic Complex, have been restored to the 1912-1916 period when George Black was Commissioner. His wife Martha Black had a great passion for the Yukon’s floral beauty and her interest in gardening and flower arranging became an important part of her activities as ‘Chatelaine of Government House’. The greenery that proliferated outside and inside the residence created a great impression on both locals accustomed to the mud and gravel of the creeks and travellers expecting to see an unrelieved wilderness of ice and snow.

The Commissioner’s Residence is open daily from May 15th to September 28th, 2015. Please visit our Visitor Information Center for guided visit, tea and croquet times.
